- What is UTC?
- UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the primary time standard the world sets its clocks by. It does not change for daylight saving and serves as the reference from which every time zone is defined as an offset, such as UTC−5 or UTC+9.
- Is UTC the same as GMT?
- In everyday use they are interchangeable and share the same offset (UTC+0). The difference is technical: UTC is defined by atomic clocks, while GMT is based on the sun at the Greenwich meridian. For practical purposes UTC = GMT.
- Does UTC change for daylight saving time?
- No. UTC is fixed all year. When a region enters daylight saving, its own offset from UTC changes (for example New York moves from UTC−5 to UTC−4), but UTC itself never shifts.
